THE SACRED EFFUSION
The Sacred Effusion is a commentary on Ziyarat ‘Ashura, one of the well-known ziyaaraat (recitals of salutation) that many of us frequently recite with great zeal and devotion. Most of the Shi’a Muslims express their veneration and sorrow when they recite this sublime ziyara on the day of Ashura. The Infallible Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), however, have taught us to recite it very often. Besides its ample merits, it is a program of revolution for the sleeping masses. The crux of the ziyara is al-tabarri and al-tawalli, which can correctly be translated as ‘fleeing from imperfection’ and ‘seeking perfection’, or in the beautiful words of every Muslim La ilaha illa Allah-Besides Allah- the Only Beloved, there is no ilah (beloved). If one inculcates its teachings in himself, he can unite with the thoughts, deeds and endeavors of a perfect human being.

ReplyDeleteThe Sacred Effusion – Book Review
ReplyDeleteThe Sacred Effusion is a commentary on Ziyarat ‘Ashura, by Sheikh Muhammad Khalfan, and is one of the well-known ziyaaraat (recitals of salutation) that is frequently recited by many Shias across the world. This work by the author, Sheikh Muhammad Khalfan has been much awaited with anxiety and anticipation. As I began to read this work, it was difficult to keep it down and I was compelled to complete it in one sitting.
The Author has masterfully dissected each and every word of the Ziarat giving its explicit meanings and the hidden treasures underlying each word and phrase with proofs from the Holy Quran and the Hadith. Once you read this book, the ziyara will take on a completely different meaning for you. Of course, it has ample benefits and merits and has been recommended to be recited for the acceptance of one’s duas and hajaats. Nevertheless, the author presents to you the true essence of the role of the zaair in this book. He shows how this word of the Almighty, when understood, becomes the means through which one can begin one’s journey towards the beloved, piercing veils and barriers to get proximity with his beloved through Sayyadus Shuhada (AS). In fact, once this book is read and understood, the reader comes to the confirmed realization that this ziyaraa is a means towards achieving the highest sense of closeness and proximity with Allah (SWT) through Sayuddus Shuhada (AS).
In his explanation of each word and sentence, there is a message for the reader on how he can commence this divine journey by emulating the example of the Imam and his companions. It is a program of revolution that awakens the slumbering consciousness of the people who are able to understand this ziyara. As the author himself mentions, the crux of the ziyara is al-tabarri and al-tawalli, which can correctly be translated as ‘fleeing from imperfection’ and ‘seeking perfection’, or in the beautiful words of every Muslim La ilaha illa Allah-Besides Allah- the Only Beloved, there is no ilah (beloved). If one inculcates its teachings in himself, he can unite with the thoughts, deeds and endeavors of Imam al-Husayn ('A),who epitomizes a perfect manifestation of the Divine Attributes.
This book is perhaps the first piece of work that has truly provided a detailed commentary of this most beautiful ziyara. Of the many wonderful publications by the World Federation, this clearly rates amongst the best. The only regret after reading this book is that it is incomplete in providing the commentary of the entire ziyara and one is left with an agitated feeling of awaiting the second part of this book which will provide commentary on the rest of the ziyara. I cannot express how anxiously one awaits this second part to make this work complete and to aid the reader towards his beloved in the most divine of all journeys.
Respectfully submitted
